Definition of Legend 


Legend is part of Narrative text.
The purpose of legend is to amuse the reader and tells about the origin something or place. It  has been told by person to person by mouth for long time.

There are the example of Legend.

  1. The Legend of Prambanan Temple

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Javanese princess whose the name was Rara Jonggrang. Rara Jonggrang was very famous because of her beauty in the kingdom was the daughter of Prabu Baka. Prabu Baka was an evil king. One day, a handsome young man with super natural power named Bandung Bondowoso defeated and killed Prabu Baka. When seeing Princess Rara Jonggrang’s beauty, he fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.

Meanwhile, Princess Rara Jonggrang felt sad due to her death father. She did not want to marry Bandung because he had killed her father. But she was also afraid of Bandung Bondowoso. So that, she thought to refuse politely. She decided to make a condition.

“I will marry you if you can do this coondition, you must build one thousand temples just in one night as our wedding gift”, requested Rara Jonggrang.

Bandung agreed the condition. He asked the demonds to Help him. By the spirit of the them, he started building the temples. Approaching midnight, all the temples from the work would nearby be done. Rara Jonggrang knew and very worried. She thought about making Bandung Bondowoso lost in building the temples.  She thought, “What shall I do? Bandung is smarter than me. I don't wanna marry him, I will lose”.

Suddenly she got a great idea. She woke up all the women in the palace and ordered them to make the noisy sounds of grinding rice so that the rooster thought it had already been dawn. The rosters woke up and made a sound  or crowed earlier as if the day became Morning. All the demons went away and Bandung Bondowoso got frustrated because he failed completing the thousandth temple.

“The princess has deceived me!” Following his anger, he cursed Rara Jonggrang, “You have been cheated. Now, the thousandth temple is you”.

At once, the Princess turned into a statue, knowing this, Bandung regretted and he went away into a farm land. From then people called the temple, Prambanan temple, and the princess statue, Rara Jonggrang statue. You can find the Prambanan temple in Yogyakarta

2. The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu 

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in Priangan Land. There lived a happy family. They were a father in form of dog, his name is Tumang, a mother which was called is Dayang Sumbi, and a child which was called Sangkuriang.

One day, Dayang Sumbi asked her son to go hunting with his lovely dog, Tumang in the forest. After hunting all day, Sangkuriang began desperate and worried because there was not any animal to hunt. He was afraid if his mother was angry. Then he thought to shot his own dog. He took the dog's liver and carried home.

Soon, Dayang Sumbi got out that it was not deer's liver but Tumang's liver, his own dog. So, She was very angry and hit Sangkuriang's head strongly with the rice ladle. In that incident, Sangkuriang got wounded and scar on his head. Then he run away from their home.

Many years later, Sangkuriang had travel many places and finnally arrived at a village. He met a beautiful woman and felt in love with her. When they were discussing their wedding plans, The woman looked at the wound in Sangkuriang's head. It matched to her son's wound who had left severall years earlier. Soon she realized that she felt in love with her own son.

She couldn't marry him but how to say it. Then, she found the way. She needed a lake and a boat for celebrating their wedding day. Sangkuriang had to make them in one night. He built a lake. With a dawn just moment away and the boat was almost complete. Dayang Sumbi had to stop it. Then, she lit up the eastern horizon with flashes of light. It made the cock crowed for a new day. Sangkuriang failed to marry her. He was very angry and kicked the boat. It felt over and became the mountain of Tangkuban Perahu Bandung.

     That is to entertain or amuse the readers. (menghibur pembaca)

C. Generic Structure

    1. Orientation

         (Open the story about What, Who, Where, When the story begins)

    2. Complication

        (There are the problems to be solved by the persons in the story)

    3. Resolution 

        ( Solutions form the problem)

    4. Reorientation 

        (The feeling of ending story. It can be happy, sad, confuse ending)

 

D. Example Narrative Text (Contoh Narrative Text)

Kancil and An Elephant

Once upon a time, there lived a clever deer named Kancil. Kancil lived in the jungle , besides Kancil was smart animal, many animals knew Kancil could solve many problems. They loved Kancil because he is very helpful.

One day, Kancil was looking for food at the forest. It was dry season, so that the foods were reduced in the forest. Kancil walked so far to find the food under the heat of sun.  Because there was a hot sunny day,  Kancil felt thirsty and  he found a well.  When he drank  the water, suddenly Kancil was fallen  into the well. It is very deep well, Kancil could not come out to the land again.

"I will die in here, anybody help me?" screamed Kancil.

Noone heard Kancil's screaming. He felt cold because of water in the well.

"Help.... Help... Help me, Please...!" screamed Kancil again.

For  along time, there was no one who heard Kancil.   He felt so sad because he was trapped in the well. Fortunately, there was an elephant that wanted to drink.

"Hello Mr. Elephant," asked Kancil.

"Why are in the well?" asked Mr. Elephant surprisingly.

Kancil thought hard to make him went out the well.

"The world will be doomsday, so I hide in here," answered Kancil.

"Really? I don't want to die... Oh My God..." screamed Elephant.

"Follow me here, Mr." asked Kancil.

So, Elephant came into the well. So that, he came out to the land by climbing the Elephant's body. How a clever Kancil was. He could come out of the well. Then, Kancil helped Elephant to come out from the well by climbing by his trunk.




Narrative Text About Karanggayam (The legend from Magelang Regency)





Karanggayam

Once upon a time, there lived a  poor widow  with her daughter  on the back of  big Coral.  They lived in the Forest where there was full of   Gayam trees(Gayam was the name of fruit). Their house was a little cottage and It was very small. They were poor and did not have neighbor but they loved each other. Her mother always took care her daughter. Her name was Nimas Ayu. Nimas was a good and kind girl, so her mother love her very much. She teached Nimas to became kind girl and she should helped everyone which was need to helped.
After Nimas was adult, she became a kind woman and beautiful. She was tall. She had a long hair. She always helped people who need helped if they were sick, they were astray in the forrest, she gave some foods to them, and she took care  the sick animals.
One day, there was a Prince was hunting in the forrest. He was handsome and he was kind. His name was Arang. Suddenly, he was astray with his guard and his friends.  He did not know where is the way to back castile. He searched the way to exit the forest but he always got Gayam trees. He confuced and he rather worried. He was afraid if he would never see his parent again.
Lord, I hope,  I was helped by someone,” He make a wish to God, ”If He is man, he will become my brother, if she is a woman so she will become my wife.”
Until the day was night, Prince Arang felt a sleep and fell a sleep on the back of coral.
The next morning, when Nimas searched the woods. He was suprised. There was a man was sleepin on the back coral.
”Oh God, What happen with him?”  screamed Nimas.
Nimas’s scream made Pince Arang woke up from his sleep.
”Who are you?” asked Prince Arang.
Nimas just smiled sweetly and she answered softly, ”My name is Nimas Ayu, I live on the back this corral.”
”I am Arang, unhappily I was not lucky,” said Prince Arang sadly.
”Why are you look sad?” asked Nimas.
”I am  astray with my guard and my friends.  I do not know where is the way to back palace. I have search the way to exit this forest but I can not.”
Nimas smiled to Prince Arang, ”Don’t worry. I am with u and everything gonna be fine.”
Then Nimas asked Prince Arang to went her house. Nimas Gave him a food. Nimas’s mother asked Prince Arang to stayed for a while, and next day Nimas would delivered Prince Arang to back.
It was Gayam. The fruit of Gayam Trees.
Pince Arang confused.
”I’m so sorry. I just give you th food like this.”
”It’s never mine, I say thank you very much. It is very delicious, ” said Price Arang Happy.
Because of the kind of Nimas, it made Arang loved her because She was interest to him.

In the palace was having trouble there. They were afraid and worried.
”My lovely husband, I am afraid if Arang meet wrong thing it will not  meet him again,” said the king’s wife.
Base on meeting from a right hand’s King and Patih,  It made a sayembara.

Prince Arang was lost. Please search him, dead or alive..
If He is man, he will become his brother, if she is a woman so she will become his wife.”
Every people wanted to become Prince Arang’s  brother and wife. But, they did not meet him. Every people thought that Prince Harry was not alive.
And finally, Prince  Arang back to his Palace. Every people were happy to hear that  was  a good news.
”Arang, why can  you life if we are lost contact with you?” said Price Arang’s Father.
”I am so sorry and I have helped by beautiful kind woman. She took care of me and she live in forrest”
The king smiled, ”who is her?”
now, she is my girl friend. I wanna be his husband, because I love her very much, Dad.”
”Don’t  say that, It is not our rule,” said The King.
”What’s is the reason, Dad?” asked Arang, ”In the sayembara has said that If He is man, he will become my brother, if she is a woman so she will become my wife.”
The King did not fulfill his promise. He was forgot his promise. He just wanted Prince Arang married with Rich woman, not poor woman like Nimas.
Prince Arang was sad and  he was very disapointed with her Father. He thought that he would live together with Nimas because it was a promise. He had think that he would leave the palace.
The next morning, he escape from his palace and run away to forest. The guard palace did not know because he undercovered as a palace gardener.
He went to forest and he married with Nimas. They lived together on the back of Coral  with it was surrounded by Gayam Trees. They lived until they were old and  they had many of children.
 The King was sad because he was lost his child. And his kingdom fell out but Prince Arang and Nimas’s place was grew up, there became a small village where the leader was Prince Arang. Because of the palace fell out  from greedy King who was Prince Arang’s father, the citizen from Palace moved, and they became Prince Arang’s citizen in that small village.
Now, we know, there village’s name is ’Karanggayam’. It from Karang and gayam. ’Karang’, in English is Coral and ’Gayam’, because it has many Gayam trees.

Snow White

Once upon a time, there lived a little girl named Snow White.  She lived with her aunt and uncle because her parents were dead.
One day, she heard her uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White.
Snow White did not want her uncle and aunt to do this, so she decided it would be best if she ran away.  The next morning, she ran away from home when her aunt and uncle were having breakfast.  She ran away into the woods.
She was very tired and hungry.  Then, she saw this little cottage.  She knocked, but no one answered, so she went inside and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work.  They went inside. There they found Snow White sleeping.  Then Snow White woke up.  She saw the dwarfs.  The dwarfs said, ”What’s your name?” Snow White answered, “My name is Snow White.”
The other dwarfs asked, “If you wish, you may live here with us.” Snow White said, “Oh, could I? Thank you!” Then Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story, and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.
